Football has historically been a generational bridge; parents taking their children to matches and local clubs serving as community pillars. But for Gen Z, traditional formats are losing their appeal. A full 90-minute match struggles to compete with the endless scroll of TikTok, Instagram Reels or live-streamed eSports.
A striking statistic: A 2022 report by Nielsen highlighted that only 23% of Gen Z sports fans prefer watching entire matches, compared to 40% of Millennials. This preference for short, engaging highlights is a direct result of their media consumption habits.
Adding to the challenge, this generation grew up with entertainment at their fingertips. From Netflix to Fortnite, the competition for their attention is fierce, and football, often seen as slow and outdated, is losing ground.
A New Playbook for Football
- Bite-Sized Brilliance
Clubs are beginning to embrace the digital zeitgeist by creating short-form content: FC Barcelona’s TikTok account, with over 25 million followers, masterfully captures behind-the-scenes moments, player challenges and match highlights in a format designed for quick consumption. Why not let fans vote for their favorite clip of the week and feature it on matchdays?
- Influencers as the New Ambassadors
Traditional advertising doesn’t resonate with Gen Z. Instead, clubs are partnering with influencers who act as bridges between brands and young audiences: Paris Saint-Germain collaborated with YouTuber DJ Mariio to engage his millions of FIFA-loving followers, aligning the club with gaming culture. Teams can co-create content with local micro-influencers, offering a grassroots connection to their communities.
- Gamification and Immersive Experiences
To truly engage Gen Z, football needs to embrace technology beyond the pitch: Manchester City’s partnership with Sony to develop a virtual Etihad Stadium allows fans worldwide to immerse themselves in the game, whether through AR (augmented reality) or VR (virtual reality). Imagine clubs launching their own esports tournaments or interactive match predictions through Fantasy Football platforms.
- Authenticity Matters
Gen Z values purpose-driven brands. Clubs must take a stand on issues that matter to this audience: Forest Green Rovers, the world’s first carbon-neutral football club, has become a favorite among eco-conscious fans. From vegan food in the stands to solar-powered facilities, their message resonates deeply with Gen Z ideals. Highlight players’ off-pitch efforts like charity work, mental health advocacy or sustainability projects to humanize the game further.
A Winning Strategy
To remain the world’s most popular sport, football must meet Gen Z where they are: online, on-demand and aligned with their values. It’s no longer enough to rely on tradition; the game must innovate. Should football double down on its tradition or lean into innovation to win over Gen Z?
